   Lot of straw...  The US tends to think in 260 ha units that goes back to   
   laying out land ownership in 'sections', 1 mile on a side. In this area   
   the forests are in mountainous areas with steep slopes. Typically the   
   company that clear cut the area grabbed the cash and ran. That also   
   applies to mining and other extractive industries. Privatize the profits,   
   socialize the costs.
