   Don't feel bad. As a programmer I've done web applications including   
   determining where to send query results on a LAN by examining the IP of   
   the querying client, interfaced with third party APis behind a load   
   balanced where I might have to try several IPs returned by the lookup,   
   analyzed latency on the LAN using ARP requests and ICMP echos, and so   
   forth and I'm still content to accept a certain degree of magic in   
   networks when it comes to MAC addresses, IPv4 addresses, and the way the   
   IPv4 addresses get manipulated in the packet header. There's a point where   
   you say 'it just works' and move on.
