     As the Wikipedia page indicates, it's 'intranet' *if* it's IP-based.   
   Not all WANs are IP-based and AFAIK, the term 'WAN' predates IP-based   
   networks. (Like Usenet and e-mail predate IP.)   
      
     We had WANs which were not IP-based, ranging from interconnect between   
   close-by offices to a worldwide network. The former probably in the   
   early 90s, the latter as early as the early 70s. Later, we indeed had a   
   worldwide intranet.
