They actually use it to confirm a valid address, and so       > send more junk.              There are two kinds of spammers: those from a reputable company that       sends a lot of email, using their true email, and others that aren't       legit and use faked email names.              The later are a pest, and you should never respond to them or click       anything. Not even download online content from that email.              The legit ones, with various degrees of legitimacy, you can at least       easily filter them out.
