   Hi Frank Slootweg,

For what it is worth, my "sensible" situation (like that of many on this
newsgroup) is that I don't throw away hardware that has worked for years.

My decisions are dictated, in part, by my hardware, where my desktop is
from around 2009 and therefore it cannot support Windows 11, S0 low power
idle, or any of the newer sleep/hibernate mechanisms. The firmware in my
desktop only exposes S1 and S3, and hibernation is not available at all.

Modern systems use S0 Low Power Idle (Modern Standby), which the firmware
on my desktop (and that of many on this newsgroup) does not support.

Given that limitation, a full shutdown is the most reliable option for me.

The machine has been solid for years as long as I start it cleanly, and
since I do not need it running overnight for ad hoc or last-minute updates,
it's perfectly "sensible" for me to shut down the PC when I go to bed.

It's just as "sensible" for me to power up the PC in the morning when I get
up to make my coffee, where the PC is booted by the time I sit at my desk.

For this "sensible" situation, shutdown is the correct technical choice.

Newer systems can take advantage of sleep, hybrid sleep, hibernate, and
fast startup. Older systems cannot. Both approaches are valid depending on
the capabilities of the machine and of the needs & goals of the user.

Your claim that it's not "sensible" to take into account the hardware and
use model notwithstanding, my goal in running this survey was simply
to learn from others how they handle their hardware and use model.

You may note that I never claimed anyone else's use model was not
'sensible' simply by the fact that their use model may differ from mine.

I believe and recommend that you should follow my 'sensible' lead, Frank.
