     Now - and since quite some time -, Usenet is indeed mostly using NNTP,   
   but as I mentioned, Usenet predates internet and hence NNTP. For quite   
   some time it used UUCP and other transport methods. For example, we used   
   RFA (Remote File Access) over a (non-TCP/IP) Ethernet network and UUCP   
   over an X.25 network. (And I used SOUP! :-)) And it's *still* perfectly   
   possible to use FTP, UUCP, etc. between peers. After all, Usenet is just   
   about sending plain-text files from one place to another.
