   I know what you're saying, but this is different.   
      
   There was a rust issue with certain year Tacomas, late 90's to early   
   '00's.  Toyota, the manufacturer, not the "Toyota" people incorrectly   
   refer to the independent dealership as, is offering a genuine check   
   towards a new truck.   The information went directly from _TOYOTA_   
   (the mfg, not the lighted sign) to registered owners of affected   
   trucks.  The buyer doesn't have to mention it up front, it's perfectly   
   good with buying services, etc... there are no other strings attached,   
   and the program has been publicized.   
      
   I think you're thinking of those stupid "Your car has never been worth   
   more!" "Factory Buy Back" come-on programs run by dealers of all   
   brands.   Those _are_ lame.
