Amazing isn't it?
Second only to South Africa and the USA in the 20th century premier league
of racism.
Also the appalling genocidal actions of the white Australians against the
native peoples continued well into the 20th century. Not as famous as the US
genocide (doesn't make good 'wild west hero' movies) but incredibly it was
even *more* ruthless.
The newly discovered Australian continent was even classified as 'Terra
Nullius', or 'empty land' as the natives were classified as verminous
animals.
Accurate figures are hard to come by as they weren't even counted in the
national census until 1927 but the general opinion is that the number
of aboriginals at the time of the white's arrival was around 750,000 people.
By 1900 this figure had dropped to 50,000.
A lot of this decline was due to introduced disease but huge numbers were
simply hunted down on horseback and exterminated by gunshot. The children
and young women were taken as slaves and the rest slaughtered.
Entire tribes numbering many tens of thousands simply no longer exist today.
The practice of 'Abo'-hunting' officialy continued right up to 1909 when The
Aborginal Protection Act effectively reclassified the Aboriginals
from 'vermin' to 'stock'. They still weren't classified as human and didn't
feature on any census - although head of cattle did.
They could no longer be legally hunted but were now under total state
control with an entire generations of children removed from their parents
and
sent away to 'training grounds' were they were instructed in the superior
white
mans ways. The so-called ('missing generations').
The aim was to 'breed them out' of existance by training them to a basic
standard and then appointing them white partners thus
diluting their blood with white until all trace of the race eventually
disapeared. This was official government policy for 32 years.
Modern day Australia is 'famous' for it's racism and it's not just the
surviving 'Abo's' that are despised.
The thousands of Chinese immigrant workers in the 19th and 20th centuries
didn't fair much better either.
Today the Lebanese are particularly hated (veils and beards = terrorists)
and any of the 'slit-eyed bastards' (the entire East Asian continent that
is) are generally treated with fear and contempt too.
There are Guatanomo style cages here where *refugees* are locked up for
months and years - one can only guess how they would treat 'terrorist
suspects'.
At the moment Australia is really booming, ironically on the back of the
huge new trade with China, but you can be sure at the first sign of any
downturn the 'ugly Australian' will once again be out looking for
scapegoats.
