   Quite so. I take it the word may have entered Gaelic from the Latin word   
   "ecclesia" as in "ecclesiastic". The P-Celts used the word too hence the   
   various places named Eccles outwith the traditional Gaelic area. There is an   
   Eccles near Kelso and of course the better known one in Manchester.
