And Henry VIII banned football for exactly the same reason.

There's no proof to suggest either king was in the slightest way effective
   in encouraging archery.

Now out there somewhere there's a book called 'Bow versus Gun' which is a
reprint of a couple of Elizabethan pamphlets on the virtues and vices of the
longbow, along with an introduction by EG Heath.

I imagine any serious library will have a copy.

The pamphlets reproduced go into some considerable detail about the
arguments at the time, and they were written by men who'd seen active
service and who were debating the defence of the realm at a time when it was
in danger from the Armada so it stand to reason that they were sincere, and
   almost certainly knowledgeable.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach
   Time for tea.
