William, that is what happens when you charge into a ploughed field in a
valley after a night of heavy rain and a day of continuous drizzle, and with
rows of sharpened stakes and longbow archers in front of you, with forested
knolls ahead of you and on both your flanks, and with a disloyal Burgundian
rearguard at your back which walks off at a critical time in the battle,
i.e. after the English and Welsh longbow archers had used up all their
arrows. The Duke of Burgundy had killed the brother of the King of France in
1407, and a civil war between the Royalist and Burgundian French erupted
from 1410-1413. The Duke of Burgundy was himself assassinated by a
pro-Royalist French party in 1419, which led to a Burgundian-English
military alliance which was to last until 1435. Of course, longbow arrows
fired volley after volley into the air in large swarms in an arching
trajectory, tipped with bodkin points, could still wreak havoc on plate
armour, and of course on the knight's horses.
