   In Scotland small streams are generally called burns. The old Gaelic term   
   'beannach' was often used to describe bends in water courses, hence that is   
   one possibility. Another is 'bannog' which was an old variant of 'ben'.   
   Although the idea that it was the place where someone burned their cakes   
   does have a certain ring to it!
