I was at a fast-food burger joint about a month ago eating my low-carb
burger and I saw there a sweet-looking man, perhaps in his early 40s, who
was "responding to internal stimuli," as they say, in the center of the
room. ("They" meaning healthcare professionals, say that when they mean
actively hallucinating or otherwise acting out due to psychosis.) It was
dinnertime and the restaurant was very busy. Many of the customers were
elderly on that particular evening. I was quite fascinated as I observed
out of the corner of my eye not so much the strange activities of the
mentally ill man, but the way the restaurant patrons carefully negotiated
their way around him. Of course no one sat near him. No one even looked at
him. They had companions and conversations to attend to and they seemed
uninterested. Certainly no one walked up to him and asked if he had
forgotten to take his meds. No one mocked him by duplicating his movements
   or noises.

I will admit to having laughed once or twice after reading a response to
raving here, but mostly I think such comments are generally mean-spirited
   and not much fun.
