Heinlein had the knife vs blaster scene take place off-camera. The
   case of the blaster's power-pack became the group's stew-cauldron
   later in the book.

According to the mythos, the script had Indy use the whip to disarm
the swordsman. Indy was sick with some 24 hour virus and feeling
lousy after many attempts to get the scene. He came back with a prop
pistol after a break just to break the mood of "This scene will never
work" that was settling over the filming. It was never intended to go
into the movie. But it was the loudest I've evern heard an audience
   react to a movie scene.
