   The US constitution establishes a formal separation between church and   
   state. The first amendment says that the authorities cannot establish an   
   official religion and limit the freedom to practice it. Despite this   
   constitutional provision, the American public sphere is full of religious   
   allusions, and references to God are ubiquitous. The aim of this thesis is   
   to present how the the separation of state and religion in the United   
   States looks like in practice, what its genesis is and why it took the   
   form it currently represents. The first chapter presents the history of   
   the formation of religious pluralism and the secular nature of the state.   
   The second chapter explores the religious structure of the modern United   
   States, with an emphasis on Protestantism as the core of the identity of   
   the American people. The last part analyzes the real presence of religion   
   in public space, starting with the importance of faith for the local   
   society. Moreover, this fragment shows the multitude of symbolism   
   referring to God and the Bible, as well as the political rhetoric in a   
   similar vein.
