   To second Stan, I very much like your analysis here!  It's fascinating   
   to see what we can learn from inconsistencies like this (whether   
   story-internal or story-external).

   And rather like software, eventually some management type comes back   
   and insists on merging the wildly divergent branch back into the trunk   
   anyway because "it has the features marketing needs". :)
