   That was a long time in the past, by the time of LotR.  By the time of   
   Bilbo Orcs had been hating the sun and shunning it because of their   
   hatred for a long time.  Habit and custom are strong - and what was   
   just hatred for previous generations can become fear and loathing -   
   almost to the point of phobia - to subsequent generations, passed down   
   from generation to generation.
