   Lewis seems to have thought that all magic had become illegitimate over   
   time. In "That Hideous Strength" Ransom tells the resurrected Merlin that   
   magic is only used for evil (or something along those lines) in the world of   
   today, and adds a bit reproachfully: "And it wasn't very permitted even in   
   your day".   
     I may misrememebr "permitted", but it was a word of that kind.
