   Thanks for posting this.  One of the reasons I've always enjoyed   
   Tolkien's work was a sense that his values and philosophies were   
   closely aligned with my own, even though he was Roman Catholic and   
   I have always been Protestant.  The same is true of my appreciation   
   for C.S. Lewis and his work, though Lewis of course was much more   
   explicit about his beliefs.  His Christian writings have had so great   
   an influence on me for so long that it is difficult to separate what   
   I learned from him and what I worked out on my own, since the two are   
   in such close agreement on most points.  In Tolkien's case I knew much   
   less about his specific beliefs, and it's gratifying to see an example   
   of an area in which we would have been in total agreement.  There is   
   not a word in the essay you posted which I would hesitate to endorse.
