     Is it not just "maw-grim" with a "prettier" spelling?  I can see how   
   a wolf that was grim of the maw could be given and accept such a name.   
   Or does that not make sense to the native?   
      
     Now the first time I read LWW I did not even know the word "maw",   
   and since then I have been too distracted by Tolkien's Naugrim to   
   notice, but today that would be my guess.
