   And I still think that Gollum might have been less inclined to 'reform'   
   (he came very close in that scene near the Stairs of Cirith Ungol), if   
   he hadn't had the contrast between Sauron, Aragorn and Gandalf's   
   treatment of him, and the more kindly treatment given to him by Frodo   
   (if not Sam).   
      
   I am sure, when he was captured by Sam and Frodo, that Gollum was   
   expecting to be dragged around with a rope again, just like Aragorn did.   
   And the different treatment he received from Frodo (albeit with a threat   
   of the oath sworn on 'the Precious'), made Gollum start to think more   
   kindly of Frodo.
