I just read/write in the two SA groups and the rugby group.
The rugby one is an exception, probably because the people there visit
with something to say about a specific subject.
But the two SA groups have declined as you say.

Far too much spam and bulk posting.
Plus too many nameless people who post mainly to advance a hysterical
political positions (usually far right) with a one liner or a racial
insult - sometimes worked out to a few paragraphs.
They at times also tend to post under more than one name which
depletes their (usually limited to start with) intelligenge and
   concentration further.

In the end is says nothing and becomes noise. There is no argument. Is
usually is merely a flat denial of what "you" say and a shouting
   matra about what "I" say.

   Too many of them.

The problem is probably the name thing. These people usually hide
behind false names. That enables them to say things they don't feel
they have to back up with any thought or they change names and thus
escape any responsibility for their points of view - or their racial
   insults.

The best contributions inevitably comes from people who uses real
names and post under those names over a period.
