   12 Then you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother,   
   13 (Mk 7:9) making the word of God of no effect through your tradition,   
   which you have delivered. And you do many similar things."   
   14 When He had called all the people to Him, He said,   
   "Listen to Me, every one of you, and understand:   
   15 There is nothing from outside a man that by entering him can defile him.   
   But the things which come out of the man are what defile him.   
   16 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear."   
   17 (Mt 15:15; 13:36) When He had left the people and entered the house,   
   His disciples asked Him concerning the parable.   
   18 He said to them, "Are you so without understanding also? Do you not know   
   that anything from the outside that enters a man cannot defile him,

   his stomach, and goes out into the sewer, thus purifying all foods?"

   many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing   
   of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.   
   [5] Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples   
   according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen   
   hands?   
   [6] He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you   
   hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but   
   their heart is far from me.   
   [7] Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the   
   commandments of men.   
   [8] For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men,   
   as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.   
   [9] And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that   
   ye may keep your own tradition.   
   [10] For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth   
   father or mother, let him die the death:   
   [11] But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban,   
   that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he

   The Tradition of the Elders

   1 Then scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying,   
   2 (Lk 11:38; Col 2:8) "Why do Your disciples violate the tradition   
   of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread."   
   3 But He answered them, "Why do you also violate the commandment of God   
   by your tradition?   
   4 (Ex 20:12; 21:17; Dt 5:16) For God commanded, 'Honor your father   
   and mother,' (Ex 20:12; Dt 5:16.) and, 'He who speaks evil of father   
   or mother, let him be put to death.'Ex 21:17; Lev 20:9.   
   5 But you say, 'Whoever shall say to his father or his mother,   
   "What you would have profited from me is a gift to God,"   
   6 will be free from honoring his father or his mother.'   
   So you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.   
   7 You hypocrites, Isaiah well prophesied of you, saying:   
   8 (Isa 29:13; Eze 33:31) 'These people draw near to Me with their mouth,   
   and honor Me with their lips,   
   but their heart is far from Me.   
   9 (Isa 29:13; Titus 1:14) In vain they do worship Me,   
   teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.'"   
   10 He called the crowds and said to them, "Hear and understand:   
   11 (Ac 10:14-15) That which goes into the mouth does not defile a man,   
   but that which comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man."   
   12 Then His disciples came and said to Him, "Do You know that the Pharisees   
   were offended after they heard this saying?"   
   13 (Isa 60:21; Jn 15:2) But He answered, "Every plant which My heavenly   
   Father has not planted will be uprooted.   
   14 (Lk 6:39; Isa 56:10) Leave them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind.   
   And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into the ditch."   
   15 (Mt 13:36) Then Peter said to Him, "Explain this parable to us."   
   16 (Mt 16:9) Jesus said, "Are you also still without understanding?
