   The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector   
      
   9 (Lk 16:15; Isa 65:5) He told this parable to some who trusted   
   in themselves, as though they were righteous, and despised others:   
   10 (Ac 3:1) "Two men went up to the temple to pray,   
   the one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.   
   11 (Mt 6:5; Mk 11:25) The Pharisee stood and prayed these things   
   about himself, 'God, I thank You that I am not like other men:   
   extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.   
   12 (Lk 11:42; Mt 9:14; Mal 3:8) I fast twice a week, and I tithe   
   of all that I earn.'   
   13 (Lk 23:48; Ezr 9:6) "But the tax collector, standing at a distance,   
   would not even lift his eyes to heaven, but struck his chest, saying,   
   'God, be merciful to me a sinner.'   
   14 (Lk 14:11; Mt 23:12) "I tell you, this man went down to his house   
   justified rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself   
   will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."   
      
   [9] And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that

   [11] The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee,   
   that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as

   [13] And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his   
   eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a   
   sinner.   
   [14] I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the   
   other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that   
   humbleth himself shall be exalted.

   1 (Jn 10:40; 11:7) He arose and went from there to the region of Judea   
   to the other side of the Jordan, and the people came to Him again.   
   And again, as was His custom, He taught them.   
   2 (Jn 8:6) The Pharisees came to test Him, asking,   
   "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?"   
   3 He answered them, "What did Moses command you?"   
   4 (Dt 24:1-4) They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate   
   of divorce and to divorce her.”   
   5 (Mt 19:8) Jesus answered them, "Due to the hardness of your heart   
   he wrote you this precept.   
   6 (Ge 1:27; 5:2) But from the beginning of the creation, God   
   'made them male and female.'(Ge 1:27).   
   7 (Ge 2:24; Eph 5:31) 'For this cause shall a man leave his father   
   and mother, and cleave to his wife,   
   8 (1Co 6:16) and the two shall be one flesh.' So then they are   
   no longer two, but one flesh.   
   9 What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder."   
   10 In the house His disciples asked Him concerning this matter again.   
   11 (Lk 16:18) He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife   
   and marries another commits adultery against her.   
   12 (1Co 7:11) And if a woman divorces her husband   
   and marries another, she commits adultery.”   
      
   [1] And he arose from thence, and cometh into the coasts of Judaea by the   
   farther side of Jordan: and the people resort unto him again; and, as he was   
   wont, he taught them again.   
   [2] And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to   
   put away his wife? tempting him.   
   [3] And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?   
   [4] And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put   
   her away.   
   [5] And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he   
   wrote you this precept.   
   [6] But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.   
   [7] For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to   
   his wife;   
   [8] And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but   
   one flesh.   
   [9] What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

   [11] And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry   
   another, committeth adultery against her.

   1 (Jn 10:40) Now when Jesus finished these sayings, He departed from Galilee   
   and came into the region of Judea beyond the Jordan.   
   2 (Mt 12:15) Large crowds followed Him, and He healed them there.   
   3 (Jn 8:6) The Pharisees also came to Him, tempting Him and saying,   
   "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason?"   
   4 (Ge 1:27; 5:2) He answered, "Have you not read that He who made them   
   at the beginning ;made them male and female,' (Ge 1:27; 5:2).   
   5 (1Co 6:16; Eph 5:31) and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father   
   and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'   
   (Ge 2:24.)?   
   6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined   
   together, let no man put asunder."   
   7 (Dt 24:1-4; Mt 5:31) They said to Him, "Then why did Moses command to give   
   a certificate of divorce, and to send her away?" Dt 24:1-4.   
   8 (Ge 2:24) He said to them, "Moses, for the hardness of your hearts,   
   permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.   
   9 (Mt 5:32; 1Co 7:39; Lk 16:18) But I say to you, whoever divorces his wife,   
   except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.   
   And whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery."   
   10 His disciples said to Him, "If such is the case of the man with his wife,   
   it is not good to marry."   
   11 (1Co 7:17; Mt 13:11) But He said to them, "Not all men can receive   
   this precept, but only those to whom it is given.   
   12 For there are some eunuchs who have been so from birth, there are some   
   eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are some eunuchs   
   who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven.   
   He who is able to receive this, let him receive it."   
      
   [1] And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he
