   There was life on earth a billion years before there was oxygen in the   
   atmosphere.  It was single-cell green plants that first created the O2   
   in the air.  That made earth uninhabitable for some existing life, but   
   allowed new life to evolve.

   Ancient earth went through several stages, including being covered with   
   lava, permanent rainfall, covered with water, and covered with ice.   
   Nothing new or surprising here.
