Marriage was a way of guaranteeing an income for women in a world where they
were not allowed to go to school or work. Back then, it would have been not
very clever for a woman to marry another woman. And on the other hand, men
coming home from work didn't have any instant food to put into the microwave
or a machine for cleaning their clothes. Marriage became unimportant, that's
what really changed.
