   Google didn't provide you anything except a means to access this group. The   
   alt.2600.* hierarchy predates Google as a whole by a number of years;   
   Wikipedia sez '2600: The Hacker Quarterly' (the magazine) was founded in   
   1984, and I imagine the Usenet groups followed rather soon after.
