   A Willard man who was facing a potential life sentence was   
   sentenced to 10 years in prison on Wednesday after raping a   
   woman at gunpoint, according to a release from the Greene County   
   Prosecuting Attorney's Office.   
      
   Bradley Eugene Smith, 43, of Willard, pleaded guilty to rape,   
   armed criminal action, burglary and violation of an order of   
   protection in December. Prosecutors argued for a life sentence   
   based on Smith's criminal history, but the release says Smith   
   received the minimum sentence allowable by law.   
      
   The release says in 2011, Smith unlawfully entered the home of a   
   woman who had an order of protection against him while he was   
   armed with a gun. When that woman returned home from work, Smith   
   picked her up, took a bottle of mace away from her, carried her   
   to the bedroom and raped her, according to the release.   
      
   The release says at the sentencing hearing on Wednesday, Smith   
   gave a brief statement in which he denied responsibility for the   
   offenses.   
      
   Prosecutors argued for a life sentence because Smith had choked   
   the same woman until she passed out during a separate incident   
   after breaking into her home back in 2007, according to the   
   release. Smith was sentenced to five years probation after   
   pleading guilty to domestic assault and burglary for that 2007   
   incident.   
      
   The release says on Wednesday Smith was sentenced to five years   
   in prison for burglary, five years in prison for rape and three   
   years of concurrent prison for armed criminal action.
