   David Sweat escaped his prison cell to dig his way out of the   
   Clinton Correctional Facility almost every night for months   
   while guards slept, according to a report.   
      
   Sweat shimmied through a hole he cut at the back of his cell,   
   climbed down pipes and explored the tunnels below for nearly six   
   months before his June 6 escape, according to the New York Times.   
      
   As he recovered from gunshot wounds sustained during his   
   capture, Sweat told investigators from his hospital bed that he   
   began carrying out his escape plan when he was transferred to   
   the cell next to Richard Matt in late January.   
      
   Waiting until after 11:30 p.m. head count, the 35-year-old   
   convicted murderer used a hacksaw blade, which had reportedly   
   been smuggled into the prison in hamburger meat, to cut through   
   a hole in the back of his cell. He was later able to saw through   
   the back of Matt’s cell.   
      
   When another inmate asked about what sounded like sawing, Matt,   
   a painter, covered and said the noise was from stretching   
   canvases or working on frames, according to a person briefed on   
   the investigation.   
      
   By February, Sweat could slip into catwalks behind cells, he   
   said. He sneaked back into his cell in time for count at 5:30   
   a.m., hiding the hole before going about his daily prison   
   routine.
