   Today, March 13, it was announced that Assemblyman Jim Cooper (D-9) will   
   be introducing legislation to tax firearms and ammunition, requiring gun   
   owners in the Golden State to foot the bill for additional school   
   counselors and safety officers. As previously reported, the bill   
   introduction deadline has passed and legislators are “gutting and   
   amending” bills that have already been introduced.  It is anticipated that   
   Assembly Bill 2497 will be the vehicle, currently pertaining to   
   “California Agriculture Day.”  At this time language on the bill is not   
   yet available, however a recent LA Times Article, written by Patrick   
   McGreevy covers the looming proposal.   
      
   Gun owners already pay an 11% federal excise tax on all firearms and   
   ammunition to help fund conservation and wildlife efforts through the   
   Pittman-Robertson Act, in addition to applicable state and local taxes.   
   The NRA supports strengthening school security, however it is unjust to   
   saddle gun owners with additional taxes to fund programs that should be of   
   concern to all Californians.
