   Protesters calling for a ceasefire in Gaza shut down the westbound lanes   
   of the Bay Bridge just east of Treasure Island on Thursday morning,   
   resulting in multiple arrests and a hourslong traffic jam, the California   
   Highway Patrol said.   
      
   About 50 people were arrested and 15 vehicles were towed, according to CHP   
   Chief Ezery Beauchamp. Some people abandoned their cars and tossed their   
   keys off the bridge, Beauchamp said.   
      
   “What these protesters have done is unacceptable,” Beauchamp told   
   reporters. “Again, you can protest. You have your First Amendment rights.   
   Don’t do it here on the bridge.”   
      
   Westbound lanes were reopened just after noon.   
      
   The demonstration unfolded shortly before 8 a.m. when protesters stopped   
   their cars and chained their arms together inside of tubes to make   
   removing them more difficult. Demonstrators rallied with bullhorns,   
   chanting slogans and waving large signs reading “stop genocide” and “no   
   U.S. military aid to Israel.” Some protesters were lying down on the   
   bridge, covered in white sheets, pretending to be dead.   
      
   Pro-Palestinian protesters claimed responsibility for the shutdown in a   
   post on Instagram, saying they were sending a message to President Joe   
   Biden to demand a cease-fire in Gaza.   
      
   “We are demanding a cease-fire, and I do think we got that message   
   across,” a demonstrator told KTVU. “We are so sorry to inconvenience   
   folks. … We cannot let Biden and (Vice President Kamala) Harris be in town   
   with it being business as usual and not being clear that 80% of the people   
   who voted for Biden and Harris believe in a cease-fire.”   
      
   Those people should be exected and their bodies tossed over the side of   
   the bridge.
