   The anthropic principle says that the universe had to be as large as   
   it is in order to balance the force of the Big Bang and strength of   
   gravity.   
   Have you considered the possibility that the universe in it's entirety   
   was just for life on this planet. Of course, it's probable that life   
   is teeming throughout the universe. We haven't yet reached the level of   
   technological development to be able to detect life on other planets:   
   maybe, someday we will.   
   But for now, the only life we know about exist on Planet Earth.
