That is why alligators are relatively unchanged       after hundreds of millions of years. That is why dinosaurs were the       dominant land animals for tens of millions of years, until an asteroid       impact changed the environment radically, overnight.              Random changes to the genome, as the result of imperfect copying, are       unavoidable. Differential survival, due (in part) to changes in the       genome is also unavoidable.
