"Cross-over" SUVs such as Toyota Highlanders are SUVs that are based on car
platforms and usually have car engines, while regular SUVs are on truck
platforms and have truck engines and suspensions. Usually quick way to tell
the difference is that trucks have full-size spare tires, while cars usually
have space-saver donuts for spare tires. The space-saver spare tire law
expired last year, so some 2004 car models such as the Nissan Maxima now have
full sized spare tires, so the old rule of thumb way to tell has become
   blurred. KM
