The reason is in the event of any emergency evacuation the cabin crew are
required to be able to see the area where the captain has ordered
evacuation. They may have to view an over wing area from windows quite a few
rows before or after the actual exit.

The reason cabin lights are dimmed in the ours of darkness is so your eyes
have a chance of coping f you have to exit in the dark on to a wing or down
   a chute.
