Yes Jim all Area Control Centres will merge, or bandbox as we call it,
    sectors in quieter traffic conditions.

The UK first merged Approach Radar services in the London Area about 10
years ago. Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton are done from the
   Terminal
    Control Centre.

The merging of smaller Approach / Radar units is not a problem and will
logically save staff numbers and costs. In a sense it is technically very
easy with correct radar and R/T coverage.

What is new is the idea that Aerodrome and GMC could be done remotely from
another airport. I believe DFS now do this and the practice will spread.
It will mean, as the article says, nobody in the Tower overnight at, say
Glasgow, and the work being done by remote control from Edinburgh.
