   Somehow I don't think the AWOS was to blame. While it may have been   
   malfuntioning, I think that any pilot that is eligible to hold a medical   
   certificate can tell the difference between 1/2 mile and 10 miles. If the   
   AWOS is reporting 10 miles and you can't see the end of the runway because   
   of fog, are you still gonna rely on the AWOS? Remember, this was a TAKEOFF   
   accident.   
      
   (On a side note, If it was reporting greater than 10 nm, it was definitely   
   malfunctioning because it should be reporting in reference to statute   
   miles).
