   Cheers.

57 sounds like a scary average! Five for wiping and 52 for playing
   with the plies? :)

For future-proofing of the 30-odd-million figure in this potted
history, I've added an 'over'. The mild letter-shuffling this
required has, I think, made for a slightly better anagram in other
ways (characterising the material from /Gargantua/ a bit and perhaps
   improving the flow also).

And so that no-one has to worry about matters such as how 'mediaeval'
is defined in the Chinese context, I've added the inverted commas.
They do, after all, come at no extra charge anagrammatically.

Anyone with ideas for further useful tweaks (e.g., 'remove _____ and
   _____, replace with ____, ___, and ___'), please shout.

   New and - I hope - improved right-hand side:

      -=#=- -=#=- -=#=-

Using paper for tush-wiping 'dates from mediaeval China'. Then came
loo roll, in the nineteenth century. Today, US people alone flush
over thirty million rolls per day.

Ancient Rome had a stick-with-sponge approach. Others went quite
happily with a corn cob for aid (harsh!). Adult text by Rabelais
   points to Toilet Goose...

Indian norm: No using Andrex TP! Apply water, held with the 'filthy'
   left, not right, hand.
