   It's Unicode (UTF-8, I think), but somewhere along the line the   
   software transmitting or displaying it has munged it.  I was able   
   to get rid of most of it by reading the article using trn in a   
   terminal window whose encoding was set to UTF-8.  There were still   
    characters indicating that something wasn't being translated.   
   However, the original showed up okay in the Pan newsreader and   
   probably would in others.  (But not in Google Groups; screwing   
   up character encoding seems to be part of Google's resolute   
   effort to destroy what's left of Usenet.)
