One need only look back fifty years or so to a time when        > rising youth crime was blamed on comic books, followed by rock-n-roll        > music, blue jeans, and so on.               I find it interesting that so many people jump to blame these       kinds of things on all of the secondary influences in a kid's life and       completely neglect the fact that nurture has been show to even trump       nature's 'hard coding' of certain aspects about an individual. I think       the only way that you can really blame comic books, rock-n-roll, blue       jeans, and the like, is if there has been complete neglect by the parent       and all that remains are material possessions to do the role of teaching       the child.        IMO this is all just a really pointed indication that there are       some serious problems in society that need to be addressed. Back when I       was in school (class of '96) I knew more than one person who was       disenchanted with the educational system and completely disregarded by       parents. When the other individuals in school stopped respecting       diversity and started judging, harshly, by the Lord of the Flies mentality       as all kids left to themselves do, there was more than one individual that       I know that wanted to strap themselves with explosives and go to the       nearest pep rally. The problem was the home life, needs that aren't met,       and the type of education about other people and humanity that only a       parent can truly give.              --- Synchronet 3.16a-OpenBSD NewsLink 1.101       Tinfoil Tetrahedron: telnet://bismaninfo.hopto.org:8023/              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
