   Look into the works of Makoto Shinkai (Garden of Words) or Mamoru   
   Hosoda (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time).   
      
   Bear in mind that a lot of Ghibli films have some pretty terrifying moments,   
   so 'family friendly' is in the eye of the beholder.  If I recall correctly even   
   My Neighbor Totoro was criticized for a bathing scene that would be   
   entirely normal in Japanese families.
