Well, not getting caught up in it is one thing, but that doesn't mean that
it isn't important news. You know something is wrong when people think that
a high school girl singing group breaking up is more important than 3,000
people dying. You're Australian, right? If someone blew up the Opera House
in the middle of a performance and the same year the band Midnight Oil got
back together, which do you think is the bigger story? They don't even
belong on the same program. The example you gave was a good one, but
Japanese media, perhaps because of a lack of having anything newsworthy to
report, try to make the personal lives of celebrities something that should
be morning drive or prime time #1 news. I only care about entertainers
doing one thing....entertaining me by their acting, athleticism, or whatever
brought them to the dance. I don't care about who they date, nor do I care
about them visiting an elementary school. There are people that do, but
when there is so much newsworthy stuff happening around the world in terms
of terrorism, economy, foreign policy, etc. I refuse to believe that a
talentless hack getting pregnant is on the same fucking level. Make an
entertainment news program and put it on there, but big-tittied Megumi going
to a movie and commenting on it will not bring me up to speed on national or
   world affairs.
