   It's based directly off of it. Shirow wrote both the Manga and the   
   storyline for the movies, other writers got involved in Stand Alone   
   Complex I believe. The Manga, being the main form of entertainment of   
   this nature in Japan is much longer and more involved.   
      
   Almost all Anime you see was Manga first. I don't know how many   
   "volumes" GitS translated into in English since it was an ongoing series   
   for quite a while. Definately more than one.
