   For starters, isn't the Ghost in the Shell anime based on just a little bit   
   of the Ghost in the Shell manga series by Masamune Shirow?  My local   
   library has a volume of it in English (I'm not sure if there were any other   
   volumes).  Also check out the Battle Angel Alita/Gunnm manga series and its   
   sequel series (I forget the name) by Yukito Kishiro.
