   Sounds like a truncated version of the Lensman TV series. The Lensman   
   movie was way different, opening with an early CGI scene with alien   
   spacecraft (Boskonians) pursuing Earth spaceships, the larger of which   
   gets away while it's "wingmen" escort ships are destroyed. I remember   
   it quite well, actually...
