I know it was broadcast on one of the early satellite services -
I think BSB - but I'm not sure about ITV. In its Robotech form its
   reasonably well known.
Its a a reasonably good series for its time, with an
interestingly edgy premise - quite possibly the only show where humanity
has had its butt kicked not just once, but three times before the first
episode is over (hence the guess; from the point of view of the alien
Inbit invaders the presence of humanity is something of a non-issue).
This set-up is slightly spoiled by the fact that the Inbit are far and
away the worst shots of all time, and thats coming from a mecha fan.

I rather suspected as much... ^_^

   >Hint: the riddles are for the titles.

My second guess would be Please Save My Earth.
