   FRENCH PACK, ca. 1855. 52 playing cards. 3 7/16 x 2 1/4 in.   
      
   The Knave of Diamonds has the name of the maker, " Gibert, à Paris," printed   
   in the lower right-hand corner, and the Knave of Spades has the word   
   "France" at the bottom of the card. The figures on the court cards, drawn at   
   full length, are in costumes of the 16th. and 17th. centuries, those on the   
   two upper cards of each suit representing French historical characters,   
   whose names they bear, while the Knaves, or Valets, represent servingmen of   
   various kinds
