My wifes best friends husband has worked for Amtrak all of his life and they
just came back from a 3 week Amtrak *cruise* through the southwest and it
   sounded delightful.
Occaisionally I watch those train shows on PBS, they're the next best thing
   to doing it.
The advantage I see that a train has over a plane is that if there's a
problem you can jump out and walk away.
On a train its all about the journey rather than the destination and thats
fine with me, I'm not really in a hurry to get anywhere.
