   I use trn (version 4 official patchlevel 77 plus local patching). It   
   works with local or remote NNTP servers quite well. In my case, I'm   
   currently using it with a local NNTP server. I downloaded the source and   
   compiled. Threaded rn (trn) is somewhat legacy these days, but as   
   someone who started with ordinary rn (a replacement for the earlier   
   "readnews"), it's what I like. You might find more useful advice in   
   news.software.readers.
