Boys will be attracted by a female supporting character. If you make
the female character the protagonist, you also attact girls.

More generally, shows where the female characters have substantive roles
are more likely to attract female viewers than shows where the women are
relegated to subordinate roles. Although these days, the latter types
of shows are pretty rare, as it's not very PC. The closest I can think
of on network TV is "2 1/2 Men".
